This vacuum diaphragm is an absolutely critical component for the proper operation of two-stage progressive carburetors manufactured by Zenith, Solex, and Pierburg (specifically within the INAT and DIDTA series). The diaphragm's primary function is to sense the increased engine vacuum during heavy acceleration and smoothly, progressively pull open the carburetor's secondary throttle valve to deliver maximum engine horsepower.
When the original rubber diaphragm dries out, cracks, or stiffens with age, it completely loses its ability to react to subtle vacuum changes. This typically results in the secondary stage failing to open at all, leaving the vehicle feeling extremely sluggish, underpowered, and unresponsive at highway speeds or during overtaking maneuvers.
Compatibility and specifications:
- Carburetor models: Primarily fits Zenith 35/40 INAT and 35/42 INAT, as well as select DIDTA carburetors
- Vehicle fitment: Commonly found as original equipment on classic models from BMW, Opel, and Mercedes-Benz
- Thread size: 3 mm (The outer thread diameter on the metal actuating rod)
Important ordering information: There are two visually identical diaphragms available for these specific carburetors. Please carefully measure the thread diameter on your old actuating rod before placing an order. This specific model features a 3 mm thread, whereas the alternative version (part no. 3504) uses a thicker 4 mm thread.
